Word Sport Definition
Gap MULTI The space between ramps or obstacles. Separates obstacles and is often jumped over from one obstacle to the other, making for more creative airs. (also called the Canyon)
Gay twist SKT While riding fakie, usually at the lip of a ramp, to complete a 360 in the air while grabbing and head back down the ramp forwards.
Gay twist SNB Halfpipe fakie to regular 360 spin with a grab.
Giant slalom MULTI A form of Alpine racing in which the racer passes through a series of gates, similar to slalom but faster and more open.
Grasser SNB A variation on the method air performed with the front hand grabbing the heel edge and twisting the board so it faces down hill. The back leg is also boned out. Named after a group of riders from Grass Valley in CA.
Grind plate INL A piece of metal or plastic that attaches to the frame and creates a better grind spot than the frame alone.
Grip tape SKT Adhesive backed sandpaper material fixed to the top of the board to provide traction.
Haakon flip SNB A halfpipe trick named after freestyle legend Teje Haakonsen of Norway. Haakon Flip is like a switch rodeo performed in a halfpipe.
Half cab SKT A 180 degree Caballerial.
Half cab SNB It is the freeriding version of the Caballerial in which one rotates 180 degrees from fakie to forward off of a straight jump.
Half pipe MULTI A type of ramp that is shaped like a "U" and used for vert skating.
Half pipe MULTI A snow structure that consists of opposing radial transition walls of the same height and size. Used to catch air and perform tricks by traveling back and forth from wall to wall while moving do
Hand plant MULTI A type of trick where one hand grabs the skate while doing a one handed handstand on a ramp, or obstacle.
Handplant (backside) MULTI A 180 degree handplant in which both hands or the rear hand may be planted on the lip of the wall and the rotation is backside.
Handplant (frontside) MULTI A 180 degree handplant in which the front hand is planted on the lip of the wall and the rotation is frontside.
Handplant (layback) SNB A 180 degree handplant in which the rear hand is planted on the lip of the wall and the rotation is frontside.
Hang up SKT When either the back or front truck catches on an obstacle, usually causing a fall.
Hang up INL To catch one or both skates on the lip of a ramp or obstacle during re-entry.
Hanger SKT Part of the truck that gets the most abuse. When grinding it is done along the top of the hanger. Contained inside the hanger is the axle.
Heel Clicker MTX Rider brings both feet off the pegs and touches them together over the handlebars.
Heel out INL A skater grinds with front foot on heel, back foot on outside plate toes turned out. Known as the "Tom Fry trick" and can only be done backside. Somewhat like a Royale but front foot is on the heel.
Heelflip SKT While performing on Ollie, the heel pushed down on the edge of the board causing it to flip over.
Hip MULTI The spot where a ramp or obstacle comes to a point. Tricks are done while flying over or off of it.
Ho ho MULTI A general term given to any two handed handplant.
Horizontal lamination SNB Layers a component, most commonly wood, that are bonded together on top of each other to form a strong material from otherwise weak elements. Used as either the full deck material or the core in the construction of a board.
Hucker SNB One who throws himself/herself wildly through the air and does not land on his/her feet.
Iguana air SNB The rear hand grabs the toe edge near the tail.
Indy air SNB A true "Indy Air" is performed backside with the rear hand grabbing between the bindings on the toe edge while the rear leg is boned. The term "Indy" may also be used to simple describe the location of the grab.
Insert SNB A small cylinder, which is threaded on the inside, that is install reinforcement to attach bindings to. Used to reinforce the area of a snowboard where the screws for attaching the bindings go into the board.
Inside ski SKI The ski which is on the inside of the turn will become the inside ski in any turn.
Interlock system SNB The tip and tail sections, usually made of plastic, are mechanically locked to the core using a jigsaw puzzle type arrangement. Spreads out the stress at the junctions of these materials.
Invert MULTI Another name for a hand plant.
Inverted 180 MULTI To get upside down while perfroming a 180.
Inverted 540 SNB To get upside down while spinning a 540..
Inverted 720 (720 mctwist) SNB An inverted aerial where the rider performs a 720 degree rotational flip. The rider approaches the wall riding forward, becomes airborne, rotates 720 degree in a backside direction while performing a front flip, and lands riding fakie.
Inverted aerial SNB A maneuvers where the rider becomes airborne and upside down at any given moment.
Japan MULTI The front hand grabs the toe edge, the front knee is tucked and the board is pulled up and the back is arched.
Jib SNB Riding which closely resembles street skating. "Jibbers" commonly slide rails, bonk trees and perform flatland tricks.
Jump ramp SKT A small ramp used to give the skater some air to perform a trick.
Kevlar SNB A man-made fibrous material that has a high strength to weight ratio. To strengthen a snowboard without adding weight and to enhance the performance of the flex action.
Kick turn SKT When pressure is applied to the tail of the board, lifting the front and turning it in another direction.
Kicker MULTI A name for a jump ramp. Kickers usually have the property of throwing you up into the air rather than giving you distance.
Kickflip SKT The same as a Heelflip except the toe pushes down to flip the board.
Kingpin SKT The bolt that holds the hanger and base plate together.
Knee pad MULTI A type of protective padding worn on the knees.
Knee slide MULTI A way of controlling a fall by sliding on plastic caps on the knee pads.
Late MULTI A term used to describe incorporating something into a trick just before its completion and landing.
Lazy boy MTX Rider hooks his feet underneath the bars and lies back on the seat with his hands in the air.
Leash SNB A retention device used to attach the snowboard to the front foot so that it doesn't run away-completely useless.
Lien air MULTI The front hand grabs the heel edge and the body leans out over the nose. Essentially a method on the frontside wall. Named after Neil Blender.
Lip MULTI The top edge portion of the halfpipe wall.
Lip trick MULTI Any trick performed on or near the lip of the wall of the halfpipe.
Lipslide MULTI To force the tail over the lip and slide on the surface before re-entry.
Look Back BMX Where the rider in the air turns the handlebars and his body backwards, looking to the back of his bike.
