The
Beginnings
It
all started many years ago, when Tomo Mihajlovski's
paper ships, a boy from Skopje's Madaz Malo neighborhood,
got irretrievably carried away by the muddy waters
of the river Vardar. That little boy's imagination
couldn't even begin to comprehend what the future
had in store for him; his becoming the first professional
diver that Macedonia has had, his home stretching
from the blue waters of the Adriatic, to those of
Ohrid, Prespa; his winning the gold a few times as
a kayaker on wild waters; his turning into the builder-visionary
of several collector-systems; his coming out as the
one to save the lives of hundreds of drowning soles…

He discovered diving quite by accident as he was serving
his time in the army stationed in Sibenik. Though
it may strike some as odd, he remained in Sibenik
a lot longer than his serving time required. They
say that he couldn't leave the sea, diving in everyday,
and to the amazement of some people, being able to
say beneath the surface a long time. In those days
there were no rubber and neoprene diving suits, cylinders
with compressed air, air compressors. Only the masque
and the fins. Those who have known Mihajlovski say
that water was definitely his obsession and diving
his life. Today Tomo and his son Zivko Mihajlovski
as the only professional divers in Macedonia at the
moment, provide the essential need for a continuance
of the tradition, very similar to the works of generations
of men and women that cultivate the old handicrafts.
"I had the privilege to have Tomo Mihajlovski
as my first and only diving instructor at the diving
courses in Sibenik," recalls one of the veterans
of this sport in Macedonia. "Tomo is a unique
man. He built the boat that we spent our summers on
with his bare hands. He knows the Adriatic as the
back of his palm. He was one of the few people in
former Yugoslavia to receive the highest ranking international
diving titles." |
